Clutch 101
Do you know what a clutch is? If you do, chances are you have a manual transmission in your vehicle. If you have an automatic transmission and there is an issue, you simply have a transmission problem and it’s all the same to you. It is different for drivers with a manual transmission. You get a feel for your clutch and you can tell when it starts to get worn, if it sticks, slips, or if it becomes increasingly difficult to switch gears. When any of these instances occur, your clutch may need to be repaired or replaced.

How The Clutch Works
The clutch disengages the transmission from the drive train. The transmission transfers motion to the drive shaft, which transfers motion to your wheels. The most important job of the clutch is to disengage the transmission from the motor so gears can quietly shift. The engine of your vehicle is designed to be constantly spinning while on. If it wasn’t spinning, it couldn’t continue to run and would shut down. Your transmission transfers that motion to the drive shaft and, in turn, to the wheels. But you don’t always want your wheels or your transmission to be spinning. The most important job of the clutch is to disengage the transmission from the motor so you can shift gears without grinding.

Clutch Service
It can be difficult to find a shop that is experienced in clutch replacements and there are those drivers who attempt to make the repair themselves. The issues involved with clutch repairs and/or replacements is mostly that it can be time consuming and labor intensive. If your clutch begins slipping irregularly or is making noises that are raising suspicion, Master Automotive Centers can inspect the system to isolate the problem, suggest the proper repair or maintenance to get you back on the road.
